Estamos Contigo: OCU helps those affected by the devastating floods in Spain

We are with you. As the DANA weather system threatens to bring more chaos to southern Spain. Euroconsumers Spanish member OCU says "we are with you" and does what it does best - advising, guiding and supporting people who have faced overwhelming adversity and loss.

Euroconsumers stands by the people of Spain and proudly supports OCU’s actions on the ground:

Damage recovery: nothing can heal the damage and shock of the flooding, but making insurance claims for property and possessions straightforward and fast for people may make recovery easier.  OCU has lots of information on what to do in the event of storm damage including collecting evidence to demonstrate the origin, scope and consequences of the storm.  They are calling for the areas of the Valencian Community, Andalusia and Castilla-La Mancha to be declared a Catastrophe Zone so that people’s uninsured assets are also covered. Consumers can also call a helpline for advice on insurance, financial aid, their rights and how to get things done.
Free counseling: in collaboration with the Vivofácil Foundation, OCU has opened a free psychological support line for those affected by the damage caused by the storms and flooding. Natural disasters are predictable and dangerous events that put significant strain on people’s mental health and welfare.  OCU’s phone line gives people a chance to pick up the phone and talk to a professional psychologist. This will hopefully offer support as people start to process and manage the huge emotional and psychological impact of the floods on themselves and their communities.
Avoid scams: OCU has a contact list of the verified NGOs working on the ground to help those affected so people know their money is going directly where it’s needed. The Red Cross, Caritas and FESBAL all have simple and safe ways to donate. Sadly, there have been reports of fraudsters exploiting people with phone calls and home visits falsely claiming to be collecting money for victims of the floods.Â
