Netflix password sharing practices and dark pattern concerns

Euroconsumers is firmly opposing Netflix's misleading display of subscription plans, which not only compromises consumers' right to transparent and easily accessible information but also verges on dark patterns. This stance is particularly relevant as Netflix's new account policy encourages consumers to explore various options, making a clear overview of available plans more necessary than ever.

Euroconsumers' action against Netflix

Euroconsumers has identified an issue with Netflix's subscription plan presentation, where the "Basic" plan is not immediately shown to customers and only appears after clicking "see all plans." This omission creates confusion, giving the false impression that there is no alternative between a subscription with ads and the more expensive "standard" plan. Euroconsumers believes these practices infringe on consumer rights and are intentionally misleading. In response, Euroconsumers' members, OCU (ES) and Altroconsumo (IT), have filed complaints with national consumer protection authorities, and investigations are underway by the Italian AGCM and Spanish CNMC. Euroconsumers, having already raised concerns with Netflix over its account sharing policy, remains committed to ensuring that deceptive commercial practices are promptly addressed.
